The CI was changed six weeks before the start of the fair and a new exhibition stand concept was therefore required – a major challenge from Deuter Sport to the eXpressive team for this year’s outdoor …

That was the starting signal for a hot planning phase in which the result can be seen! The new concept for the stand area is based on the graphic design, for which the flexible

Aluvision exhibition system is ideally suited. The magnetic wall system that we developed especially for Deuter could be integrated into the wall construction with some adjustments for the attachment of the exhibits. In addition, our inventors designed magnetic holders for the new “Futura series” in order to present the backpacks to visitors in a rotatable manner. All furniture such as storage boxes and a new information counter were made in our joinery.

The graphic team of the Deuter marketing department created the graphic layouts themselves and made a significant contribution to this much-praised result. Photo shoots were made under high pressure, layouts and print files produced. Compliments for the great cooperation!

Due to the large number of graphic areas, we were faced with the task of finding a printing process or material that is as odorless as possible and still of high quality in color resolution. We will deal with this topic in stand construction shortly with a separate blog entry.

Only the very good cooperation with all trades made this project so successful – a big THANKS to everyone!

Angelika Güc, you are an expert in visual language in marketing communication.

Why is the selection of pictures so important for the exhibition stand? Pictures are the best sellers. Because visual impressions reach us the fastest. While our brain takes pictures immediately, it first has to convert texts into information. We take 83% of all information with our eyes and 60% of the brain deals with the perception, processing and storage of images. This means that a company’s market success depends more and more on the visual representation of the brand or the product range. In addition, pictures are simply more believable than texts and stay in the memory for a lot longer.

More than any other element in marketing communication, we are captivated by images. You can do it in a split second,

  • to awaken our attention
  • to touch us emotionally
  • to kidnap us mentally
  • to put us in moods
  • to tell stories
  • to memorize our memory.

What tips can you give companies for using pictures at trade fairs?

At trade fairs we are confronted with a real flood of information – a mix of images, text and often also sound in combination with moving images (films, animations, virtual reality, self-running presentations, etc.). In order to reach the trade fair visitor with the abundance of offers and exhibition stands through visual communication, these five points are important:

1. Clear alignment of the visual language to the target group

The image does not have to please the marketing or sales manager, but has to appeal to the target group. It must taste good to the fish, not the angler. The prerequisite is, of course, that you know your target group or the buyer personas well. I often hear the phrase “we don’t like this” or “the image was rejected by our managing director” when selecting an image. It is not about your own taste, because it is a trade fair and not your own living room.

2. Gain emotions: Images have to touch our senses

Technology companies, in particular, find it difficult to depict their services and offers visually and resort to complicated representations that appear technical and cool. Mostly, an attempt is made to stay close to the product and offer, ie to “illustrate” it. But that is not necessary at all. It is more important to address the trade fair visitor emotionally, to put him in a good mood, in a comfortable atmosphere. Only when a picture appeals to our senses do we stop and automatically record the text information. The images do not necessarily have to come from the area of the product range.

3. Score authentic shots

Images can be seen from a wide distance, whether they were quickly selected from an image database or whether the situation presented is realistic and credible. If this is not recognizable for the trade fair visitor, we simply do not feel that the company takes it seriously. We quickly recognize that it is an interchangeable image and our subconscious transfers this to the offer or the provider.

4. Quality has its price

High quality products and high-priced services are marketed at trade fairs. Why many companies still use junk stock photos is a mystery to me. Some budget is invested for a trade fair stand. However, the photos are often saved. In my opinion, the wrong approach, because it is the pictures that we immediately perceive at a trade fair stand. Companies have to consider whether they want to make their trade fair visits appetite for a visit to the stand with a high-quality visual language or offer visual fast food.

5. Consistent company-wide image concept

Photos and illustrations that are used at trade fairs should fit well into the cross-company visual language. The same images that are already used for brochures or the website do not necessarily have to be used. Nevertheless, recognition should be noticeable. The trade fair managers should coordinate closely with colleagues from the print, web, social media, etc.

6. Align the picture content with the stand design

Exhibition stands are often confusing when a large number of small exhibits are exhibited. If the image banners contain any number of individual elements, this has a stressful effect on the trade fair visitor. The eye finds no rest. Texts are not effective.
Here it makes sense to form a counterpoint to the small-scale or uneasy offer with calm and uniformly colored images.

In this example, the large-format photo of the Dead Sea appears calm among the many small, colorful exhibits and also provides an ideal background for the text. (Photo: eXpressive GmbH)

7. International address through regional image concepts

Many German subsidiaries of global companies receive the exhibition graphics from the marketing department of the headquarters. The imagery does not always fit the local market and therefore does not appeal to the trade fair visitor. Here it is important to check the pictures and graphics to see whether they can reach the regional target group.

We thank Angelika Güc for the many valuable tips! If you want to read more about the subject of visual language, you should find out here..

Whether as an additional presentation area, highly specialized built-in part, as part of the stand concept or as an independent eye-catcher, displays and prototypes developed for brand appearances always require one thing above all:

Love to detail

A whole range of requirements and ideas should be developed for multiple use in a short time and with the best possible price / performance ratio.

Sustainability, durability, transport size, weight, surfaces, and the perfect execution of the details are keywords that come up again and again. In the end, the deciding factor is often the good price within the customer budget.

In order to design a coherent display to match the requirements of the respective customer, our interior designers and master joiners work in close cooperation with the customer.

3D visualizations and prototypes are created. At the end of the process, there is a series-ready display that is optimally tailored to the customer.

Our two following project examples from this year show that a display can upgrade any exhibition stand, or even as a soloist for smaller events and conferences, offers a quick alternative to complex stand construction:

1. Exhibition stand for gas measuring equipment / MSA Safety Challenges:

Complex connections, heavy exhibits, complex cabling with sophisticated cable routing, very short production times, international use / shipping. We had just 4 weeks from the first concept sketch to the finished display. The elaboration of the details was a special challenge.

Due to the complex cabling, exhibits weighing up to 25kg must remain on the stele even during Europe-wide transport. This means that it can be used directly without any assembly effort.

In order to reduce transport costs, the stele (including the packing box) must not exceed the size of a Euro pallet.

The box can be disassembled so that it can be stowed away to save space during use. The Euro pallet used for transport forms the base of the steel and is clad with panels without tools.

The exhibit stele in the dark decor emphasizes the exhibits particularly well. Accents in green were painted according to customer specifications to match the corporate design (RAL). A built-in spot illuminates the writing surface. Writings and logos were foiled.

2. Illuminated wall with cutouts / BE Power GmbH challenges:

Modular design, short production time, free-standing Eight square, yellow-green lacquered exhibition cubes are distributed in different sizes on the wall of the exhibit.

Each cube is illuminated with a furniture installation spot. The cubes protrude slightly over the wall on both sides, this detail emphasizes the cubes and simplifies production.

Painted feet made of 12mm flat steel to match the color of the wall surface give the 2.5m x 2.0m wall its stability without stealing the show. The feet can be mounted in the middle or only protruding on one side. This allows the exhibit wall to be placed freely in the room or directly on the edge of the stand.

A clever detail is the fastening of the toughened glass panes over grooves. This saved costs for special glass fittings and did not impair the visual appearance of the cubes.

After the trade fair, the imposing wall can be divided into two segments and transported safely to the next location in the custom-made transport box.

We keep meeting the desire of medium-sized companies to show their best side internationally with modular, multi-use exhibition stands at numerous trade fairs and events throughout the year.

This is often a challenge for both the customer and the trade fair architects.

With our customer Arthrex, we showed how an idea can turn over 40 exhibition stands from 10m2 to 80m2 internationally into one year, and that in a highly efficient and sustainable way.

Arthrex Messestand

The design is based on a free-standing “X” from our Aluvision stand construction system. In the corners it is supported by wall surfaces that contain storage cupboards, backlit graphics, built-in screens or solid wall panels. An enormous variety of stand sizes and equipment can be implemented.

The lighting is housed in the legs, so that hanging points and additional lighting can be dispensed with. A system floor can be adapted to the different stand sizes and hides the power cables of the exhibits. The modular counters and showcases can be placed anywhere on the stand and are already equipped with the necessary exhibits in the central warehouse.

The stand impresses with its high-quality materials, the expressive, backlit graphics and flush-mounted screens. The assembly time was reduced to a minimum by the well thought-out construction and in most cases it takes less than a day!

The logistics of the overlapping events is often a risk factor that can drive up costs. To this end, eXpressive GmbH has developed an interactive program that uses tables and schedules to record the stocks on a daily basis and thus provides information in good time about bottlenecks. The customer, the agency and the stand builder can also access this program on the go via the Internet, so everyone is always provided with the latest data.

The customer’s requirement for clear zoning of four product divisions on the 160 sqm head stand had a decisive influence on our stand concept.

The central, suspended ceiling element is the eye-catcher, presenting one zone on each side, visible throughout the entire exhibition hall. The arrangement of all other elements on the booth is based on the orientation of the suspended cube. The intentionally dark appearance of the trade fair stand makes the illuminated, coloured exhibits stand out particularly well.

For each of the new products, a suitable presentation area had to be created. A mixture of Aluvision system frames and conventional components allowed the complex technical requirements of the customer to be ideally met. The exhibition stand accentuated the quality of MSA products by using particularly high-quality materials.

Despite the many different and partly heavy exhibits, we were able to work with Aluvision system frames and thus keep the costs for individual constructions low. This again confirms us that highly individual exhibition stands can be realized with the Aluvision exhibition system. The fast assembly time and the low waste volume of this exhibition stand impressed not just our customer MSA Safety.
